The Level 3 Certificate for Working as a Close Protection Operative within the Private Security Industry is a recognised qualification for individuals who work or would like to work as Close Protection Officers. It is based on the SIA Specification for Learning and Qualifications for Close Protection Operatives. Successful completion of the qualification enables learners to apply for a SIA licence in Close Protection.

Subjects covered include threat and risk assessments, walking drills, embus and debus, incident management, legislation relevant to the role, operational planning and surveillance.  The qualification comprises of the following mandatory units:

Unit 2 – Planning, Preparing and Supporting a Close Protection Operation

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence. This accredited qualification has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA Specifications for Learning and Qualifications and provides the necessary skills and knowledge for learners who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a door supervisor within the private security industry. Subjects covered include behavioural standards, legislation relevant to the role, search procedures, powers of arrest, recording incidents and crime scene preservation, avoiding conflict and reducing personal risk, conflict management, reducing risk and communicating effectively.
The qualification comprises four mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Working in the Private Security Industry
Unit 2 – Working as a Door Supervisor
Unit 3 – Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry
Unit 4 – Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry

Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer Working within the Private Security (RQF)

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.

The Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer (RQF) has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA Specifications for Learning and Qualifications and provides the learner with the necessary knowledge and understanding for those who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a security guard within the private security industry.

Subjects covered include the roles and responsibilities of security officers, patrolling, search procedures, security systems, communication, reporting and record keeping, legislation and its relevance to the role, avoiding conflict and reducing personal risk, reducing risk of conflict, effective communication and problem solving strategies.
The qualification comprises three mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Working within the Private Security Industry
Unit 2 – Working as a Security Officer
Unit 3 – Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry

Level 2 Award for Upskilling a Door Supervisor within the Private Security Industry (RQF)

In March 2012 the SIA announced the intention to require existing door supervisors who had achieved the pre-QCF/SQCF Door Supervision qualification, and allows them to meet their mandatory top-up requirements for door supervisors and retain their SIA licence. Topics covered include identifying the differences between defensive physical skills and physical interventions, the importance of dynamic risk assessments in situations where physical intervention skills are used, effective deterrents to terrorist activities and duty of care requirements when dealing with children and young people.

Level 2 Award for Working as a CCTV Operator (Public Space Surveillance) within the Private Security Industry (RQF)

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.

This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to apply for a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a CCTV Operator in Public Space Surveillance. This qualification is based on the relevant SIA specification for learning and qualifications and is supported by Skills for Security, the standards setting body for the security industry and the SIA, which regulates the private security industry.

To complete this qualification learners are expected to undertake 32-hours of learning. The SIA stipulates a minimum of 23 contact hours (3-days) if flexible distance learning is undertaken.

Topics include the key purposes of the private security industry, the differences between civil and criminal Law, the roles and responsibilities of each member of the CCTV team, the importance of accurate record-keeping, equipment fault reporting procedures, and actions to take if a suspicious object is found in the CCTV control room.The qualification comprises three mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Working within in the Private Security Industry 1- hour (1 hour assessment after the successful completion of distance learning)
Unit 2 –  Working as a CCTV Operator within the Private Security Industry
Unit 3 – Practical Operation of CCTV Equipment within the Private Security Industry

Level 2 Award in Conflict Management (RQF)

This accredited qualification meets the requirements of anyone with a customer-facing role who deals with service users or the general public. It is also relevant to those who would like a better understanding of the prevention of conflict, giving them more confidence in dealing with situations as they arise.

This qualification is generic and can be applied to a wide range of learners and sectors. Subjects covered by the conflict management qualification include legislation, clear communication, proactive service delivery, situation assessment and managing unrealistic expectations.

Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Intermediate) (RQF)

The Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Intermediate) is a qualification designed to develop and provide formal recognition of learners’ knowledge, understanding and competence of surveillance techniques.  The qualification introduces learners to the essentials of covert surveillance and provides them with a progression route to the larger Advanced Award or Certificate sized surveillance sector qualifications, which expand further on the knowledge and skills covered in this qualification and additional aspects of covert surveillance. This qualification is aimed at those who wish to gain a recognised qualification, whether they are new to the investigative or enforcement sectors or they have a professional background in a related field and intend to engage in continuing professional development. The skills developed in the qualification will be relevant to the private investigation sector and to individuals with a military background carrying out resettlement training prior to civilian life.

All learners will cover topics including the principles of types of surveillance, log keeping, third party awareness, radio communication, managing dynamic changes, planning and debriefing, legal issues and organising foot and mobile surveillance which are covered in the following four mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Organising Teamwork in Surveillance Operations
Unit 2 – Obtaining and Collating Information by Surveillance
Unit 3 – Organising Foot Surveillance
Unit 4 – Organising Mobile Surveillance

The Total Qualification Time (TQT) for this qualification is 61 hours, of which 50 hours of Guided Learning Hours (GLH) must be completed by the learner.

The Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Advanced) is a qualification designed to develop and provide formal recognition of learners’ knowledge, understanding and competence of surveillance techniques. The qualification provides learners with a progression from the smaller Intermediate Award by expanding further on their knowledge and skills and prepares them to progress to the larger Certificate sized surveillance sector qualification, which in turn covers additional aspects of covert surveillance.

This qualification is aimed at those who wish to gain a recognised qualification, whether they are new to the investigative or enforcement sectors or they have a professional background in a related field and intend to engage in continuing professional development. The skills developed in the qualification will be relevant to the private investigation sector and to individuals with a military background carrying out resettlement training prior to civilian life.
