Who requires this qualification?

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence. This accredited qualification has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA Specifications for Learning and Qualifications and provides the necessary skills and knowledge for learners who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a door supervisor within the private security industry. Subjects covered include behavioural standards, legislation relevant to the role, search procedures, powers of arrest, recording incidents and crime scene preservation, avoiding conflict and reducing personal risk, conflict management, reducing risk and communicating effectively.

Who requires this qualification?

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence. Any business that uses CCTV to monitor a public space or members of the public will need trained security staff qualified as a CCTV operator and who hold a SIA licence. A level 2 award for CCTV operators in the private security industry qualification is required by law for an individual to apply for a SIA licence to work as a CCTV operator.

Level 2 Award in Conflict Management (RQF)

This accredited qualification meets the requirements of anyone with a customer-facing role who deals with service users or the general public. It is also relevant to those who would like a better understanding of the prevention of conflict, giving them more confidence in dealing with situations as they arise.

Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Intermediate) (RQF)

The Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Intermediate) is a qualification designed to develop and provide formal recognition of learners’ knowledge, understanding and competence of surveillance techniques.  The qualification introduces learners to the essentials of covert surveillance and provides them with a progression route to the larger Advanced Award or Certificate sized surveillance sector qualifications, which expand further on the knowledge and skills covered in this qualification and additional aspects of covert surveillance. This qualification is aimed at those who wish to gain a recognised qualification, whether they are new to the investigative or enforcement sectors or they have a professional background in a related field and intend to engage in continuing professional development. The skills developed in the qualification will be relevant to the private investigation sector and to individuals with a military background carrying out resettlement training prior to civilian life.

All learners will cover topics including the principles of types of surveillance, log keeping, third party awareness, radio communication, managing dynamic changes, planning and debriefing, legal issues and organising foot and mobile surveillance which are covered in the following four mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Organising Teamwork in Surveillance Operations
Unit 2 – Obtaining and Collating Information by Surveillance
Unit 3 – Organising Foot Surveillance

The Level 4 Award in Covert Surveillance Operations (Advanced) is a qualification designed to develop and provide formal recognition of learners’ knowledge, understanding and competence of surveillance techniques. The qualification provides learners with a progression from the smaller Intermediate Award by expanding further on their knowledge and skills and prepares them to progress to the larger Certificate sized surveillance sector qualification, which in turn covers additional aspects of covert surveillance.
