This accredited qualification focuses on the importance of maintaining health and safety and ensuring that employee actions reduce risks in the workplace. It is intended for learners working in any workplace environment, including retail, manufacturing, food premises and the care environment.

It is also suitable for those who are returning to work or starting work for the first time. Learners will gain a sound introduction to all aspects of health and safety including legislation, fire procedures, chemical safety, manual handling and personal protective equipment. It is ideal as an introduction to general health and safety for any environment.

Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF)

Achievement of this accredited qualification will enable learners to work safely and to recognise and deal with hazards in the workplace. The aim of the qualification is to provide candidates with knowledge of the basic health and safety practices essential in the workplace. This includes the hazards and risks along with the relevant legislation, and ensures awareness of cost-effective, practical control methods.

This qualification is applicable for any private or public sector working environment and provides employees with an awareness of their own safety, as well as the safety of customers, contractors and members of the public. The achievement of the HABC Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification will enable learners to work safely and to recognise and deal with hazards in the workplace.

This Ofqual approved qualification has been developed specifically for insertion into the Qualifications and Credit Framework with full support from Proskills. It is therefore fully compliant with industry and regulatory standards as well as being recognized by the Health and Safety Executive, auditors and other enforcement officers.

Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF)

This qualification is aimed at learners already working in the capacity of supervisor, manager or team leader and also those who are preparing to start work at this level.

The total qualification time (TQT) for this qualification is 30 hours and of this 21 hours is recommended as guided learning (GL).

Topics include legislation, the benefits of using a safety management system, the principles of risk assessments, hazards and risk control methods.

This qualification is assessed by a multiple-choice examination.

Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF)

This qualification is aimed at learners currently working, or preparing to work, as supervisors and managers with a direct responsibility for health and safety management.

The total qualification time (TQT) for this qualification is 55 hours and of this 40 hours are recommended as guided learning (GL).

Topics include duties and responsibilities, health and safety policies, developing and implementing risk assessments and safe systems of work and incident investigation.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by a written examination and by externally set and marked activities.

Fire Safety:

Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (RQF)

This accredited qualification aimed at all staff, particularly new starters in any workplace, where a basic understanding of fire safety is required. Those gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace with recognition of the contribution they may have in preventing the start and spread of fires.

Level 2 Award in Fire Safety (RQF)

This accredited qualification is aimed at anyone involved in the management of fire safety in any workplace. This includes managers, supervisors, team leaders, fire wardens (marshals) and staff working in any area where there is a potential risk of fire. Those gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace and will recognise the consequences of a fire in any premises.

Moving and Handling:

Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (RQF)

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 do not set any weight limits for lifting and carrying loads but amendments in 2002 now require employees to have adequate or appropriate knowledge or training in order to make assessments to judge whether safe moving is possible. The regulations apply to almost all work environments from offices to care homes and factories. There are different risks associated with different sectors and this accredited qualification offers learning outcomes which are suitable for all. The qualification includes:

  • The reasons for safe moving and handling
  • The importance of risk assessment
  • The principles of safe manual handling
  • The safe application of manual handling skills

The qualification provides an effective means of ensuring that employees are aware of their responsibilities and understand the principles of the safe moving and lifting of loads.
